KILLED WHEN ON WAY HOME FROM EUROPE

Killed When On Way Home from Europe

SOWERBY BRIDGE SOLDIER WHOSE FATHER DIED LAST WEEK

Whilst coming home on leave from Europe on June 22, Pte. Telford Mallinson (34) 18 Longbottom Avenue, Beechwood, Sowerby Bridge, was accidentally killed in a traffic mishap.  He leaves a widow and family.  Pte. Mallinson had served in the Essex Regiment for about two years, and, before joining the Army, he was in the employ of John Atkinson & Sons Ltd, woollen manufacturers, Willow Hall Mill, Sowerby Bridge.

Pte. Mallinson was a son of Mr. Telford Mallinson, Old Fold, Scar Head, Sowerby Bridge, who died on June 29 at the age of 77.  Mr. Mallinson senior, who had been a widower for many years, was one of the best known men in the district.  When a youth he lost an arm in an accident which occurred at a local cotton mill.  For over a quarter of a century, he delivered newspapers and periodicals throughout the district, for Mr. W.H. Broadbent, newsagent, Sowerby Bridge, retiring a few years ago.   He was a tireless walker and after his daily rounds with newspapers, a task which he carried out most conscientiously, he would go out again for miles, delivering circulars and other literature.  A keen fancier, he bred canaries and pigeons and had met with success as a short distance pigeon flyer.  He trained his pigeons by taking them to the top of Blackstone Edge and would walk the full distance there and back to his home.
