Notes on Identification to the names in the Rental taken from the Court Rolls of the Manor of Wakefield as published in theYorkshire Archaeological Society, Record Series.

The following year a Court at Wakefield has the following :—" Thomas de Tothill, keeper of the goods of the Blessed Mary in the parish of Halifax, versus Thomas son of Modde and Henry son of Thomas, for debt."

MATHEW de TOTHILL. Jan. 13. 1307. Peter the Chaplain, gave to the Court 2s for help to recover 6s from Walter the Clerk of Dewsbury and Mathew de Tothill, his pledge. They are to be distrained for it. A later Court informs us that Mathew was distrained of two oxen.

WILLIAM de TOTHILL. A Juror in 1309.

JOHN del BOTHERODE. Mentioned in June, 1308, as paying 6d. for dry wood, also a Juror in 1309.

MATHEW del WODEHOUSE. A Juror in 1309.

ALCOCKE del WODEHOUSE. Fined 6d., Nov. 20th, 1307 for drawing blood of William Foune.

ALEXANDER del YOKES. A Juror, 1309.

RICHARD son of MALYN. Richard son of Malina appears in 1308 under Rastrick as paying 6d. for vert.

ADAM BITHEBROKE. Juror 1309. At Rastrick Tourn in 1398, the following entry occurs :

" Richard son of Roger del Feld stole an ox from Alexander de Rastrick, a pig from Beatrice de Tothill, and a heifer from Adam Bythebroke : to be arrested."

ROGER del BRIGGEHOUSE. There were two of the name, presumably father and son.

Page 47

BEATRIX de FEKESBY. In 1307 (Jan. 25th) a mention is found of Beatrice, daughter of Thomas de Fekesby, who gives 3s 4d. as relief on three acres of land in Fekesby, after the death of her father.

THOMAS del WODE. June 24th, 1308. John the Rede of Thornhill and John the Strengfelagh to be arrested, when found, for burglary at the house of Thomas del Wode of Fekesby, whereof they were indicted at the Tourn at Rastrick. They had taken goods to the value of forty shillings, as appears by a previous Court.

Jan. 25th, 1308. Thomas del Wode appears as one of the executors of Thomas de Fekesby in the recovery of a debt at a Court at Wakefield.

Robert son of Thomas del Wode, (Feb. 1308) came to Court and was attached to prosecute a suit against John Batty of Westbretton in respect of a horse, price 6s 8d. stolen from him by the said John. Thomas del Wode, the father, was one of the sureties.

HENRY STYVEN. Presumably the culprit who refused to pay the ploughing custom in 1309.

SYMON de SCHIPDENE mentioned in 1297 and in 1298.

WILLIAM son of STEPHEN. June 1307. Ralph son of Richard Kerlinghowe drew blood from William son of Stephen de Fekesby; Fine 12d.

An interesting example of evasion of Manorial customs is to be found in the proceedings at a Court held at Rastrick on Wednesday in Whitsun week of the year 1309, which also introduces us to many names which have appeared in the Rental.
